Advocates of Change

Advocates of Change

Since its founding, the Symphony Orchestra Institute encouraged significantly increased engagement by all participants in North American symphony organizations in the overall affairs and destinies of their institutions. The Institute professed that dramatic organizational change was needed in many symphony organizations and that new approaches would take place only with a growing interest and commitment by many participants from the various constituencies within these organizations. The Institute also believed that efforts of participants in any one organization wouldl be enhanced and reinforced by parallel efforts in other organizations.

To bring about more grassroots activation, personal energy, and impetus for organizational improvement, "Advocates of Change" was formed. Members of AoC embraced the following common beliefs:

  • As a supreme form of human creativity and achievement, music performed by symphony orchestras ennobles the spirit.

  • Symphony orchestra organizations preserve symphonic music performance so that this art form may be passed from generation to generation.

  • The environment for symphony organizations is rapidly changing.

  • To flourish in this changing environment, symphony organizations must evolve into high-performance institutions universally valued in the communities they serve.

  • Everyone concerned must take an active stake in how effectively our symphony organizations function, how organizational performance can be improved, and how all participants must work together toward these ends.

Membership in AoC was open to anyone who shared the common goal of achieving better symphony organizations and preserving and enhancing the musical arts they encompass. It was the Institutes goal to foster a community of all those people who held this common purpose.

The AoC was organized in mid-2000 with an initial group of 36 persons giving their commitment to this effort. Below is a listing of all persons and some institutions who became AoC members during the Institute's existence. Special thanks to all!
